Youth Ambassadors provides leadership training in a variety of ways, and the Community Ambassador Projects are a part of that training. This summer, we had the opportunity to work with six, amazing, local organizations. Our teens performed a variety of tasks and learned how each organization impacts Kansas City! Through this multi-dimensional effort, youth become deeply invested in the growth, development, and safety of their own communities.
Each year, emerging youth leaders in our program serve as youth peer mentors for our S.A.V.E. Program (Suicide Awareness and Anti-Violence Education). The S.A.V.E. Program is offered in partnership with the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department and is a youth-led, peer-to-peer violence prevention mentorship program where teens discuss the devastating impact of violence in our communities using evidence-based curriculum and materials. YA collaborates with child health experts, community members, civic leaders, and anti-violence content experts, to help teens identify the potential for violence in social settings, learn how to report violence once it occurs, while learning how to de-escalate conflict in a safe and effective manner.
Youth peer mentors from our S.A.V.E. Program work with our team of professionals to offer an annual Teen PEACE Summit for youth throughout Greater Kansas City. Attending youth participate in breakout sessions where they discuss how violence impacts our communities. Past panelists, guest speakers, and program partners include the Center for Conflict Resolution, Anthony Butler with the V.I.P. Movement, Na’im Al-Amin with Swagg Inc., and the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA).
At Mock Interview Day Ambassadors practice their interviewing skills as they connect with dozens of diverse career professionals. This day is the culmination of months learning and preparation on behalf of our Ambassadors. Last year, 94% of our youth reported feeling better prepared for future employment and educational opportunities through the development of skills that increase job readiness.
