The Written Word
The Youth Ambassador writing program is designed to broaden students’ perspectives by discussing and reflecting on current events, selected works of literature, and poetry. In the process of writing, students gain writing fluency and greater competency in grammar rules and usage. As part of our program, youth ambassadors keep daily journals. Writings are read, discussed, dissected, and published, anonymously if needed to preserve the dignity of the ambassador. Lines of communication and a venue through which students both give and receive respect and genuine concern are established when personal journals are shared. Many students join gangs to gain respect from peers and to experience a feeling of belonging. Here, as students find a venue to share within Youth Ambassadors, the need to replace a family structure that is missing for many students is reduced.
