Youth Ambassadors’ Blue Jean Bash 2019
Karen Ball is an accomplished journalist and community volunteer whose support for YOUTH AMBASSADORS includes service on the original Board of Directors. In 2014, Karen was the principal author of the Prologue to I’m Not No One, the powerful collection of essays and poetry written by some of the earliest Ambassadors. In this way, she helped to introduce YA to the wider world. Karen is a native of Kansas City, Missouri and graduate of the University of Missouri’s famed School of Journalism. The first woman Chief of the Associated Press capital bureau in Jefferson City, she later moved to Washington where she covered labor issues, Congress, and the election of President Clinton before joining the New York Daily News as White House Correspondent. Her freelance writing has appeared in the New Yorker, the Washington Post, the New Republic, and George.
David Von Drehle visited one of the first YOUTH AMBASSADORS classes in 2010 as editor-at-large for Time magazine and later served on the Board of Directors. Raised in Aurora, Colorado, he began his career in journalism as the youngest sports writer in Denver Post history before joining the news staff of the Miami Herald. At the Washington Post, he served as New York Bureau Chief, Assistant Managing Editor, and Senior Writer before joining Time, where he wrote more than 60 cover stories. Since 2017, David has been back at the Washington Post as a twice-weekly opinion columnist, and recently received Harvard’s David Nyhan Prize for Political Journalism. He has also written several books.
Karen and David are the parents of four children: Henry, Ella, Addie and Clara. They live in Johnson County, Kansas.
